911 Frequently Asked Questions

Helpful information about calling 911 and what happens when your call reaches NMRECC.

What should I do if I accidentally call 911?

Do not hang up. Stay on the line, explain that the call was accidental and answer any questions the telecommunicator asks.

Can I use Wi-Fi calling to dial 911?

Yes, but the location associated with your wireless carrier may not be your current location. Always clearly state where the emergency is occurring.

Can an old phone without active service call 911?

Many uninitialized wireless phones can still call 911. Old phones given to children can therefore create accidental emergency calls.

Why did my phone call 911 on its own?

Emergency SOS features on smartphones and watches can be activated accidentally. If a call is placed, remain on the line and tell the telecommunicator what happened.

What if I cannot speak after dialing 911?

Stay connected if possible. Telecommunicators are trained to work with callers who cannot communicate normally and may provide alternate ways to answer questions.
